Chapter Fourteen – Petra

“How did you and Jason meet?” Petra asked as she savored the flavor of the chicken in a roasted garlic sauce that melted in her mouth. When they’d arrived at The Happy Bear Club, she’d expected the inside of the club to be dark and dingy and the food to be similar. Instead, she was surprised to find the interior and the people both warm and inviting and the food to be exquisite.

“We’d met a couple of times doing some charity work abroad. We were both on a team that built a school in Africa. Jason came home, while I stayed over there and helped build a couple of wells and install solar panels to help the children of a local village get an education.” Killian spoke as if all of those things were an everyday occurrence, something that people simply did because it needed doing.

“That’s pretty heroic, you know.” Petra closed her eyes in bliss as she ate the last piece of her chicken. “That was wonderful.”

“The food is very good. We’re lucky to have such a wonderful chef.” Killian made no comment about being called a hero.

“So why Bear Creek?” Petra asked. “You met Jason in Africa and didn’t travel back here with him. So why decide to give up your life abroad and come live here?”

“It seemed like a good place to start again.” He was evading her question, which he was entitled to do. The evening was relaxing, the wine and the company so good, she didn’t want to spoil it. He’d already told her he didn’t want to talk about parts of his past. As Petra lifted her glass and drank the cool crisp wine, she suspected his move to Bear Creek and the reason he needed to heal was all mixed in together. “Tell me, so far, are you happy with your move here?”

“Yes.” She sat up straighter in her chair. “I was so scared. This is the biggest move I’ve ever made. Making the final decision for both me and Shane was incredibly tough. My family was supportive, they knew I needed a new start, but I could sense they didn’t really want me to go.”

“Because they’d miss you. It’s understandable.” Killian finished his steak and placed his knife and fork down on the plate. “That was incredible. I could eat it again.”

“I don’t know where you’d put it if you did.” She covered her mouth as she laughed. “You and Shane will get along just great since that’s the kind of thing he’d say after dessert.”

“He’s a good kid. You’ve raised him well,” Killian complimented.

“I can’t take all the credit. Kevin helped raise him, too.” Why was she still loyal to a man who had torn her family apart? She placed her wine glass down on the table as the effects of the alcohol made her brain buzz. “He wasn’t a good husband. Not really. He wasn’t a great dad either. I think Shane and I kept hoping one day he’d change.
